Inclusive Excellence

Centering and advancing efforts

Public interest technology at Arizona State University means centering and advancing efforts, be it research, practice, policy or technological innovation, guided by values centered on access, participation and success pertaining to PIT across the university. ASU's commitment to inclusive excellence includes striving to dismantle barriers to resources and opportunities in institutions, so that students, faculty, staff, and the community at large can live a full and dignified life of learning. ASU also seeks to allocate resources to ensure that everyone has equal access to these opportunities from an institutional perspective. Inclusive excellence principles form the bedrock of engineering, policy, humanities, teaching design and beyond, coming together to ensure equal opportunities across race, gender, class, religion, disability, LGBTQ+ identity, and other potential differences and, more, acknowledging and celebrating such differences. Inclusive excellence means amplifying the voices and perspectives of those who experience more obstacles due to their identities.

Across these four other categories of PIT, inclusive excellence can be enhanced by creating a culture of reciprocity to ensure the public good. It can be implemented in learning by creating an academic environment that is open and encouraging to all students, such as introducing effective strategies and new technologies that support and advance students from under-represented groups. Inclusive excellence can be implemented in scholarship by encouraging research that contributes to the advancement of equitable access and diversity within the institution and in the broader society. It can also be implemented in engagement by facilitating collaborations within and beyond the institution that address societal challenges and address the needs of disadvantaged communities, including developing new tools or approaches to enhance diverse voices. In operations, inclusive excellence can ensure not just the welfare of the diverse students, faculty, and staff but also their equal opportunities throughout the institution in recruitment, retention, access, and more.
